After feeling down and a bit discombobulated during the first week I decided it was time for a plan. This was going to be my new normal for a while and I needed to make the most of it. On a normal weekday, I am up at 5 am. Jon and I usually leave the house around 7 am to get to work. I had slept in the first week because I really didn’t think I needed to be up that early if I wasn’t going to be getting myself ready for the day but because I was working 10 hours of overtime I felt like I had no time to get anything done in the evening, nor did I want to. This week I decided to make six simple positive changes to my schedule to help keep me in a positive attitude.
First, I started to work out in the morning. I decided I would still get up at 5 am because I didn’t want to get off track when we did (FINALLY) get to go back to work. (The actual building, I mean.) We own a very old treadmill that hadn’t been used in a very long time. I literally dusted it off the first time I used it. I walk every morning for 30 minutes. I didn’t think I’d like it or it would help, but I was wrong. It helped tremendously. I was more awake, I felt better, and it’s helping reach my fitness goals.
Second, after my workout, I showered and got ready for the day. I pick up my house a bit because I like working in a clean environment. It helps me feel more focused and not think about all the things I still need to do after I’m done at work.
Then I do my devotions. I am working on reading through the Bible and a devotional book called “Awaken” by Pricilla Shirer. I love starting my mornings in alone with God. Reading His Word and being reminded of all the things He’s already brought His people through helps me remember that He’s going to get us through this as well. The “Awaken” devotional is full of Biblical truths and challenges. I have loved growing in my faith every morning during my quiet time with the Lord.
Then I start my workday and do my best to stay focused and “work as unto the Lord”. (Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. Colossians 3:23.) Somedays that is harder than others, as I’m sure we can all agree. I am grateful to have a job through all this and even be earning overtime. God has provided for us and I will not take that for granted.
After work, if it is a nice day Jon and I will take a walk outside to get some fresh air. Fresh air is so good for you. Don’t stay cooped up in your house all the time. Get out. If exercise isn’t for you just sit on your porch for a few minutes. It will help, I promise. We have also been cooking a lot of meals at home. I do like to cook so I have enjoyed this time to try some new recipes. I try to get in one or two brand new recipes a week just try something new.
We have come up with a fun way to chill out together in the evenings. We made up a game with all our TV series that we own. We have 8 TV series that we own and have seen multiple times. We pick a series we want to watch, say, Friends, for example, we then take a dice and roll it first for the season we will watch, and then roll it again for the disc of that season we will watch. It’s fun and it makes it interesting. Jon has just added to it now that he is going to assign a different color dice to each series. (He is a gamer and has many sets of dice) We will then pick a dice out of a bag each night and that will be the show what we will watch.
Lastly, I have found that it is VERY important to have an attitude of gratitude. I pulled out my “Thankfulness Jar” that I try to have out during November. Every night after dinner Jon and I will write down 3 things we are grateful for before we go to bed. I have heard of others starting a Gratitude journal with the same idea. Some days it’s hard to think of things, but I believe it helps us stay in a more positive outlook if we remember that we have so much to be grateful for during these difficult days.
