Help-a-Heart's Celebration of Life Dinner & Silent Auction

June 25, 2018

Tonight is the big event! What event you ask? Well the Help-a-Heart fundraiser of course!! If you don’t know what all the excitement is about, keep reading.

Help-a-Heart is a non-profit organization in Iowa that I have been working with for a little over a year now. Their mission is sharing Love by providing financial assistance and emotional support to Iowa families affected by congenital heart disease. Follow this link to find out how I first heard about them.

Last year my mom and I went to the Help-a-Heart dinner and silent auction fundraiser together. I had no idea what to expect, but we ended up having a lot of fun. It runs from 5 pm-8 pm. We got there right at 5 pm. Dinner was provided by Jethro’s BBQ and was delicious. There was a kid’s area with crafts and a photo booth. A Disney princess and Marvel/DC comics heroes showed up to greet the kids. There were three walls of tables just full of fun items that were up for auction. We slowly made our way around the room and decided what we wanted to bid on. We found a seat and people watched for a while. At 6 pm they started their program. A couple families talked about their CHD kids. They showed a video honoring the Heart Angels (which my mom had to turn away from because she started crying) and they ended with a big group picture. The bidding closed at 7 pm for the west wall, 7:15 for the north wall, and 7:30 pm for the east wall. There was a flurry of motion as the bidders tried to get their last bids in and out bid one another. It was funny to watch. I didn’t win anything. (1) I wasn’t aggressive enough (2) I didn’t have a lot of money to spend. My mom did win a couple of boxes of hats for the grand-kid's playroom in her house. She was happy with that. They had about 600 people show up and they raised $20,000. It was a successful and fun event!

Since then I have been able to participate in other Help-a-Heart events and I still attend the monthly support group. It is held at GiGi’s playhouse in Windsor Heights, Iowa the second Monday of every month. There is usually a topic to discuss for adults and there is childcare provided. It is always an educational and encouraging time.

I would encourage anyone who has CHD, loves or knows someone with CHD, or even just wants to support those with CHD to look into Help-a-Heart and get involved. You’re invited to join us tonight at the dinner and silent auction at Walnut Community church in Windsor Heights. I will be at the book table selling my book and other merchandise. 50% of all proceeds of my book tonight goes to Help-a-Heart!
